AP Hill
I know that this subject has been talked about in quite a few treads but I have a few questions and this is for the 2014 season.
First off a little about me I am currently in the Navy and I am being stationed in Maryland and there is no way I will live in that liberal state so I have decided to live in Caroline. I grew up in Caroline and my biggest deer to date was killed in Caroline. I hunted AP Hill around 2005 or so but quit when everybody had to pay 50 bucks for their background check. When I did hunt AP Hill I was young and still learning now I am little older and still learning, I taught a kid to hunt there and he killed a nice 8 point as his first deer.
The problem I have is I have been hunting the mountains so I might need a little help with these flat land deer. I will be hunting there so I don't need there are no deer there and so on. I am thinking real hard about the CA areas and after reading the regulations I wonder how hard it is to be waived from the probationary period, any body have any idea? I have private land but its 4 hours away and little bit to far to hunt everyday I'm off. I will mainly be hunting during the week and mostly during the bow and muzzleloading season, we go to our hunting camp for the 2 weeks of rifle season.
I am not looking for your secret area here just a few pointers so I can start to get ready and have something to dream about. Is it like any other public land you need to get as far off the road and the thickest stuff possible and pattern the hunters as much as the deer. I am the kinda of person that will sit all day. What about vehicles, I can't really remember the roads to much, is it a good idea to bring a beater to hunt out of. Sorry for being long winded and thanks in advance.

RE: AP Hill
Me, Mitch, Neal and Meak hunt the hill every season. I actually work there. Still have to pay the $50 and for the CA's it's an extra ten. The post commander is the only one who waives the probationary period for CA hunting. You can submit a request to have that waived.

It's not bad hunting. It is hit or miss. The herd is still recovering from a EHD and the blizzard of 2010. Some nice bucks have been taken from the CAs this year. Scout, get there early (ESPECIALLY FOR THE CA areas)and hunt! Get to know the areas you want to hunt every year and you will put one on the ground.

I think hunting during the week is the best. There is hardly anyone there. Opening day is always pack, Ethier sex is always packed. The roads arn't bad so brining a beater isn't a problem. I see guys in camrys stuffing deer in the trunk.

I never had any luck until Mitch took me under his wing and started teaching me. Link up with someone you know that hunts it often and you will learn alot.

If you need any information I will help you out. Here is a link for the hunting regs if I you have any questions that I didn't cover:

RE: AP Hill
Thanks a lot Grizzly. What was your rate in the Navy? I read the regulations front to back a couple times, I'm really missing the chance to go hunting, I've been overseas from two year and granted I've taken leave both year during October hunting a week just hasn't done it for me, this year was one of the best years I've had, I hunted 4 days and my wife was able to harvest her first deer and it was with a bow!!! Do you know what it takes for the Commander to waive somebody, does it happen? What do they look for to waive people?

Why does AP Hill blow? Every time AP Hill comes up that's all you have to say about it. Where do you hunt at?

RE: AP Hill
scott85, welcome, and I'd be glad to help ya out too. I won't be out much between now and the last two weeks when either sex comes back in though. Shoot me a PM if ya got any questions. As far as being waived, don't expect it to happen. I have a GS-13 federal LEO buddy who wasn't waived after requesting it. Any of us veterans can escort ya to a CA if you want, just hook up a time to go.

Thanks a lot meak, I'm still overseas just getting ready for next year, Whats the test like for the CA and what is the training like. I figure I will try to get waived what the worst thing he can say is no, I figured a 10 year E-6 would be enough but I guess not.
